Blast from the Past #28 repost: Archie TMNT movie one adaptation covers

When the first TMNT movie came out in 1990, we did a comic book adaption of it which was published in two versions by Archie Comics. Above is my pencil art for the “deluxe” edition...

... and below is my pencil art for the cover of the regular newsstand edition. I'm pretty sure Kevin inked both of these. -- PL

  1. I have a poster of the bottom drawing. I've had it since I was a kid. It was one of my first exposures to the "comic book style" Ninja Turtles. So cool...!

  2. The adaption would make a nice extra to a SE DVD, curse you Warner Bros.

Speaking of Archie Comics, is it possible to post the "TMNT Adventures" comics to the official TMNT website?

  3. Heh I'm watching TMNT on ABCfamily while reading this blog post. I was actually going to ask in the comments section a question related to the movie so I'm glad this is a movie related post.

My question is: How come there wasn't more merchandising for the first movie? There were no action figures or video games. For the second movie we at least got action figures but I'd still love for some TMNT 1 figures. Maybe NECA could do them?

(Great drawings by the way, I love Shredder in the background, it's so imposing!)

  4. Oh and Ironically I think the second drawing was also used for the gameboy's TMNT video game packaging, even though the game had nothing to do with the movie.

  5. -->> ..it was the nature of the beast, Paul .. i suppose at the time.

Like when the used Dooney's painting for the artwork on the original NES game and the parallel PC versions.

Tho' Dooney's and and these illustrations render to a killer iconic level.

The Newsstand version remains one of most strongest renditions to me ..and just the power of Shredder's pose.

again i think we're pretty lucky.

  6. Yeah I realize the video game artwork almost never had anything to do with the game itself as it was usually lifted from the comics. I remember Dooney's artwork used for the first and third NES games being my introduction to the all red bandanas, though I also recall not being too confused by it and just accepting that this artist wanted to draw them with all red bandanas. I had seen weirder stuff as a kid I suppose and didn't give it a second thought.

  8. Heh, I have a nifty coloured and framed version of the first one that I picked up in a second-hand store many years ago, and that currently graces my eldest son's desk. I never knew where it came from, so it's cool to finally find out! Thank you! ^^

  9. I've always loved the top one. I have a quick OFF TOPIC question. Does anyone know when TMNT (Vol.4) #30 is planned for release at the Turtles website? I know it's pretty much whenever Peter gets it done, but I didn't know if anyone had any inside info as to if it was coming anytime soon? Thanks!

I'm not completely sure when I wil get to it. It's possible that I will finish up the last bits of work I need to do on it within the next month. -- PL

  12. Hey Pete,

I have an odd question, would you ever consider selling this piece? The one with Shredder above the turtles. I tried buying Kevin's rough for this but he couldn't find it in the move they just had. If it's something you would offer, please let me know, i really would interested as a private collector. I would treat it with the utmost respect. Thanks, Mauro Balazar
