Blast from the Past #31 repost: TMNT with dimensional gateway

This is kind of fun -- another drawing whose purpose I can’t recall, though I was clearly having a good time drawing it. I think I drew this one sometime in the early 1990's. I like the "homage" to one of Jack Kirby's many concepts from his "Fourth World" series at DC -- the "Boom Tube".

Curiously, the day after I scanned the pencils, I found hanging on the wall of my ofice at Mirage Studios this cool inked version. Jim Lawson inked Leo, Eric Talbot inked Don, Mike Dooney inked Mike, and Dan Berger inked Raph. -- PL

  4. Heh, is Boom Tube strictly a Animated Series word, or did it originate in the comics? I've only started reading DC comics with the new Collected Batman/Superman books. Might as well start in the beginnig. I always thought it would be a cool idea to give the Turtles space travel and dimension travel abilities permanently through technology..

Hey Peter, Is there any chance the original series or new series can get the super fan treatment like this?

    http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Real-Ghostbusters-The-Complete-Series/10755

This set has just about everything a Real Ghostbuster fan could want on it (minus toy segments, it seems)...it'd be neat to see the Turtle series and movies get this kind of treatment. Doubtfull, though, considering the lack of enthusiasim on 4Kids, LionsGate and WB's part though..

Summer, I apologize for leading you to a misapprehension -- when I said that "the day after I scanned the pencils, I found hanging on the wall of my ofice at Mirage Studios this cool inked version", what I meant was that I had found the penciled piece, scanned it for my old "Blast from the Past" page, and then -- coincidentally, I was not actively looking for it -- found the inked piece in my office. It had been inked quite a while ago, very shortly after I had finished the pencils, and I had asked the guys back then to do the inking. Sorry about the confusion! -- PL

"It would be nice to see the Turtles get this kind of DVD set, and though I know of no plans to do so, and don't think it is very likely, it certainly isn't impossible. -- PL"

I would just be happy with dvds with extra features such as commentaries and behind the scenes featurettes, certainly something like that should be easily obtainable for the ninja turtles, with a little push from Mirage, ahem.

  7. Peter,
I love the rendition of Darkseid in the animated series of Superman. He's the villain you just love to hate....along the lines of Mumm-Ra, Darth Vader, etc....

Is Kalibak a cartoon creation, or a comic book creation as well? I know things change from books to screen, but Michael Dorn made him an interesting character to boot.

Neil, you should really try to check out the Kirby "Fourth World" stuff -- it's being reprinted in nice hardcovers right now, with the contents arranged as they appeared originally on the stands. And Kalibak is from the comics, and he's a great character there. One of the most brutal (but not cliched glamorized brutality) fights I've ever seen in comics takes place between him and Orion -- I think it was in the last or next to last issue of the "New Gods". Kirby at his peak, in my opinion. -- PL

What do you you think of the recent "Death of the New Gods" storyline from DC?

I haven't seen it -- I read very few comics these days -- so I can't comment specifically on it. But I will say that I have rarely liked any non-Kirby treatments of Kirby "Fourth World" concepts. -- PL
